The Origins Of The I9 Form

The use of an I-9 Form is mandated by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) bureau of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to establish worker eligibility.

Employers need to have each of their employees fill out the Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9, or be subject to fines of as much as five and a half thousand dollars per unauthorized worker, alongside with other penalties. Such employers may also be subject to sanctions called for under other laws, especially those relevant to immigration.

Even failing to keep correct records can carry fines, to the tune of over a thousand dollars per missing or problematic form, regardless of whether the employee is legally authorized to work in the United States, so great is the value attached by the government to the I-9 Form.

Individuals, employer, employee, or otherwise, who intentionally commits or participates in document fraud might be subject to over three thousand dollars for the first offense and up to six and a half thousand for subsequent offenses. Information must be reverified as essential, such as in the case of expiring supporting documents. Information must be retained even for former employees, up to one year following the end of employment.

The “I-9 requirement” came about with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA), which law stipulated that employers must verify an employee’s identity and eligibility for employment in the United States. Employers might be liable even in the situation of hired sub-contractors who themselves employ unauthorized workers. Such verification isn’t required in the case of volunteers.

IRCA also provided for a number of anti-discrimination conditions so that factors like national origin and citizenship status cannot be used against job candidates. Thus, in order to avoid any possibility of a lawsuit, corporations won’t ask for the I-9 form to be filled out until after somebody is actually hired.

The Medical Benefits Of Red Wine

Wine for medicinal purposes? It used to be a humorous excuse of alcoholics, however scientific study seems to confirm the practice – in moderation. Consuming a single five-ounce serving of red wine a day appears to duplicate the beneficial elements of caloric restriction without any of the potential unwanted effects such as muscle loss and decrease in bone density.

Nothing has been effectively proven yet – because long-term studies require, well, a long period of time to finish – but all indications so far have been positive. Unlike the case of smoking, which doctors in the 1920s actually recommended for good health (!), the daily drinking of red wine in moderation does indeed seem to provide health benefits.

Be aware that we’re talking about red wines in particular, not regular, and not barley wines or other kinds of fruit wines. Nor do we mean other kinds of alcohol, regardless of whether made from grains or vegetables – only red wines.

The main reason for this is that resveratrol, the key chemical providing all these benefits (there are others, of course; a little on them later), comes from grape skin and is found most abundantly in red wines. Specifically, resveratrol is produced by grape skin when infected by fungus, such as that which happens during fermentation through the exposure to yeast.

White wines, in contrast, are made with minimal contact of that sort during their production process and therefore are not the best source of resveratrols; not surprisingly, all other kinds of alcohol contain no grapes at all, though all alcohol, in moderate, minute amounts, are now presumed to provide some benefits to the heart.

So pick up a small glass of “red, red wine” and kick back to the UB40 song of the same name and sip slowly, enjoying your daily dose of resveratrol, polyphenols, antioxidants, and flavonoids!

The Great Industry Of The 21st Century

Green energy is expected to be the great industry with the 21st Century, paying great dividends to the country or countries that pioneer and successfully capitalize on it. Economically, environmentally, and even militarily, the capability to produce sustainable forms of energy is a prize which will set the fate of the world for centuries to come.

Sadly, the United States is in danger of losing the green energy race. Our nation is addicted to oil and the politicians are addicted to corporate money, so change has been nearly impossible.

On the other side of the globe, literally, are the leaders of China, who have embarked on an ambitious plan to produce solar panels as well as implement solar farms themselves for domestic use. The Chinese are also big on wind farms and nuclear power, other technologies which Americans first developed but have now abandoned.

Sounds ominous? The chattering classes are all up in arms about the issue, but nothing has been getting done, not even with the election of Barack Obama. The interests are just too entrenched. Everyone stands to lose some thing, and contemporary American culture seems to have lost sight of any notion of the common good.

It’s a crazy situation. You can find American citizens, engineers and scientists, educated with American tax dollars, who now conduct their work in China or are employed by businesses that do the rest of their work there. In effect, United States tax dollars are educating the individuals whose work will ultimately benefit the Chinese!

Of course, these scientists and engineers are only working for the highest salaries. But the businesses they work for – American firms, owned by American citizens – complain that they simply can’t do business here; they need to go where the action is, and that’s China. To do anything else would be like trying to sell ice at the North Pole.

Suitable Coffee Machines

You might think that the expansion of coffee houses the past twenty to thirty years would suggest a decrease in the sale of coffee machines, but on the contrary they continue being as popular as ever, with espresso makers one of the most ballyhooed goods on late-night television. It’s a interesting thing, and will possibly not make a lot of sense on the face of it, but in fact the number of businesses dedicated to providing coffee has only made people want to buy coffee machines of their own!

Now why should this be? The reply points up to an intriguing feature of human nature. But first think of why people should patronize coffee houses: it isn’t all about the coffee. Many restaurants, such as Starbucks, have hit upon the effective formula that formerly saw the rise of sidewalk cafes throughout Europe in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: people needed a nice place indoors! Escaping cramped quarters at home, such establishments offered a relatively high-class environment for the price of a cup of coffee. And it’s the same today, with students among the most faithful of customers for these chain coffee houses.

But why should people need coffee machines, then? Well, in this case, it also isn’t necessarily all about the coffee. That’s right! You’d think that people who like coffee either go to coffee houses or buy coffee makers to use at home. But in both cases, it isn’t always about the coffee itself, but everything else relating to how they get their coffee!

In the case of a coffee house, people go for the ambience as much as anything else. In the situation of a home coffee maker, it’s about the convenience: no lines to wait on, but everything on a timer and ready when you wake up or come home, with the same range of flavors – all at a much reduced cost. And there’s always seating available!

Why Weight Lifters Use Athletic Tape

I love going to the gym. Everything about it turns me on. Just the st-r-r-eeetch of athletic tape gets me going. I can see it now, even in my mind’s eye, the taut white tape as well as the specks of dust undoing it from its roll sends up into the air.

Weird? You bet. That, and chalk. Athletic tape and chalk. I dust my palms in it for kettlebells and Olympic weightlifting. Downright needed. You want a proper grip, but you also want ease of movement for those split-second snatches and catches. Chalk lets you do that.

Athletic tape supports the wrists while in those high-speed, high-torque maneuvers. Tricks of the trade. Some folks use tape for their knees and even ankles, too, but luckily I do not have to. But it’s comforting to feel support for my wrists, which is possibly my personal weakest link.

Outsiders, non-weightlifters, may well ponder why, why not just do some thing else, like machines, if using free-weights are so dangerous as to need such accessories as chalk and tape. It’s a valid question, at first glance. But these things aren’t really necessities, which is why they’re referred to as “accessories” in the first place.

It is just that many serious, competitive lifters use them because, well, we’re a superstitious bunch, and any bit of luck will do. Much more talisman than anything else, tape and chalk are comforting, psychologically comforting, and thus empowering. For at elite levels of competition, the distinguishing mark is the mental edge.

Besides, it does stand to reason how tape and chalk help; one supports joints while the other supports grip, respectively. Aside from strength, your joints and your grip are the other crucial elements that determine success in lifting. With a strong grip and solid joints, all you need to worry about is appropriate form and of course the sheer strength to lift. Having a strong grip and strong reliable joints means you are already halfway there!

The Many Factors Involed In Building A Internet Business

Starting up an internet business is a new way to riches in the 21st Century. Having a minimum of start-up costs, nearly anyone with enough drive and know-how can do it. And so indeed, new website domains are registered every single day in their tens of thousands! It’s an exciting time to have The Next Big Idea, because the power of the world wide web means unprecedented scope and depth.

But while having an internet business is quite easy, actually making money will be a struggle! It’s less of a struggle, however, in most cases, since, even if you were the proverbial guy selling snowballs to eskimos, with the power of the world wide web you can now market them to, say, the islanders of Tahiti instead. (of course, the logistics involved are probably considerable, even should demand prove profitable!)

Therefore the first thing to comprehend about an online business is that while it makes a lot of things easier than before, everything is still difficult to achieve. With millions of websites out there, people will need to be able to find yours. This simply means that search engines must rank you highly – within the top seven results, essentially, above “the fold,” where visitors don’t have to scroll down the page because the overwhelming vast majority of people simply do not. Actually, you can be on page one of Google and still barely make any business if you’re not within the top seven!

It’s actually even harder than that – the majority of people don’t bother scanning past the top five, really. Usability test after usability test confirms that individuals will just click the very first few results, typically two or three, before being captivated by something they see. So it is important to rank highly!

There’s so much involved in setting up shop on the web. Like with any other decision of consequence in life, please make sure to exercise due diligence and do thorough research!

Real Estate Transactions with Fighting Spirit

So you’re “in” real estate. Whether as a lay buyer or seller, or a professional investor or developer like Isaac Toussie, you’re dealing in real estate and naturally you’ve combed the internet looking for information to help you with what you do. Other than the absolute most fundamental of dicta, such as “location, location, location,” what it means to be in the real estate business is this: negotiating.

If the heart of all business in general is selling (and it is), then the heart of the real estate business is successfully negotiating as positive an outcome for yourself as possible. And acquiring the most advantageous terms calls for mastery of one of any number of tactics and strategies, such as the art of the low-ball, which is what this article will examine.

It’s how the pros handle things, pros such as famed developer Isaac Toussie. This “gray art” is one of the most common methods employed in any negotiation, whether it involves property or diplomacy or even, if you think honestly about it, romantic courtship! It’s a way to fluster the other party, maybe psychologically destabilize them enough to be open to your point of view, as it were. Essentially, you behave so outrageously as to flummox them and reframe the situation – which is to say, the negotiations – more to your advantage.

Basically, you low-ball the numbers and see if they don’t work out in your favor after all. Low-ball the asking price with a counter-offer that is so much lower that it would almost feel insulting – operant word being “almost.”

You don’t want to be considered a time-waster, of course. You need to be taken seriously, after all. So your low-balled number shouldn’t be totally out of the realm of possibility, like a dollar! But it should be dramatically low enough, such as one-fifth or even more if you’re feeling really lucky (one rule-of-thumb holds that if you’re not personally embarrassed by the figure, you haven’t gone low enough). The take-away is that by doing this, you open things up at a lively pace, signaling to the other party that you’re one mean businessman (or woman).

But don’t confuse this attitude with a take-no-prisoners approach. You are negotiating, not fighting. You should be prepared to keep on negotiating, which is to say remain engaged and respond quickly to the other party. The goal in low-balling is to gauge the other side’s reaction. Is s/he now angry? Or amused? Or do they understand what you’re doing – hence signaling their own experience in the matter and their own toughness? Such information will be crucial to helping you plot the rest of your moves.

Learn how to be a tough negotiator by low-balling the other party and flustering them! Go for broke. What is there to lose? (Again, don’t get “being aggressive” mixed up with “being insulting.”) If you don’t ask, you won’t receive. It is more art than science, and thus a matter of delicacy, which calls for experience – but you have to start somewhere, and you need to start now. So start low and with any luck maybe you won’t have to go up too high!

The Use Of Rhinestones In Pop Culture

Talk about rhinestones and folks of a certain age may well remember Elvis Presley and his outrageous outfits. But the singer had always been a little outrageous in his gyrations, and for much of his career, even early on, his outfits have tended to push the envelope of establishment tastes. Rhinestones, then, were only the latest in flamboyancy for him, though, to be sure, his tastes did progress to ever more extravagant designs.

Given such popular perceptions of him, tied as they are to his choice of dress, even when off the stage, it’s amusing to contemplate that once upon a time he was more square-cut than not. Instead of rhinestones and the like, the worst that could be said of his look was the lock of hair that fell over his forehead, out of place from the slicked back coif he wore at this time.

Then he was drafted into the Army, in 1958. Wisely, he made the decision, at least partly on a former manager’s advice, to serve his tour as a regular soldier rather than receiving preferential treatment by performing musical performances that would certainly have kept him in touch with the public.

Wiser still, producers at RCA, his record label, made sure to keep him in the popular imagination through the ingenuous marketing of previously unreleased material, ten of which turned out to be Top Forty hits, and also the recompilation of old favorites across four albums.

All while on active duty with the Army in Germany! Far from hurting his career as he’d feared, Elvis became quite the Everyman for serving like everyone else. Unlike some of his fellow musicians, Elvis was usually considered the most respectable, the most presentable, to mainstream/establishment sensibilities. Parents might still fret at his highly suggestive and deliberate pelvic gyrations, but at least that’s all they could object to concerning his public persona.

Marble Sculptures A Symbol Of Love

Talk about marble sculpture and most folks are going to think about some thing like Italian marble statues, such as as Michelangelo’s David or Bernini’s Ecstasy of Saint Teresa. However some of the greatest works of marble are whole buildings themselves, for instance India’s Taj Mahal in Agra, an ancient bustling city on the banks of the Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh.

First mentioned inside the old Hindu epic the Mahabharata, where it was referred to as Agrevana, or “the border of the forest,” today’s Agra is most famous for the Taj Mahal, Urdu for “crown of buildings.” It’s a marble mausoleum constructed by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtza Mahal.

It’s possibly the most stunningly beautiful piece of marble sculpture anywhere, an entire complex built to symbolize eternal love. It is not for nothing that the Taj Mahal is usually found on lists of the seven wonders of the modern world, including one composed by polling a hundred million people.

Thus the Taj Mahal attracts anywhere from two to four million visitors each year, of whome about two hundred thousand are from outside the country. This is really a significant fact, as admissions are significantly lower for Indian citizens than for foreigners.

The best time to see this beautiful work of marble is during the cooler months of October and November, which are important considerations since plenty of walking can be expected (the entire complex consists of several buildings and sweeping gardens) on account of the strict pollution controls in place that ban all traffic, except for some electric busses. Polluting the environment is also a serious matter in the area around the Taj Mahal.

Its storied white marble had turned yellow, and now there’s a four thousand and fifteen-square mile area around this UNESCO World Heritage Site where emissions are subjected to the strictest standards.

From Portable Camping Tents To Portable Grills

Yes, a camping tent is essential equipment. But how about a portable grill? Maybe not as essential, but for most casual campers, it’s still some thing of a need. After all, what’s a warm camping tent with out a warm fire outside, complete with the uniquely fragrant aroma of juicy meat being roasted?

Especially at the end of a hard day’s hike! Even though fun in itself, the great outdoors could undoubtedly be improved on with something hot and delicious!

Needless to say, this being the 21st Century, hot food does not have to mean a real fire. There are now meals ready to eat (MRE) that utilize a chemical reaction in order to heat up food flamelessly! A lot easier to pack along with your camping tent than even the most portable of propane grills, to be sure.

Next to shelter, food is the other aspect of camping that probably most discourages people who are otherwise inclined to give the pastime a try. It sounds really nice, even romantic, to spend the evening outdoors, by a lake or on a mountaintop, but with out adequate shelter or great food, all the little miseries of a life in the wild become magnified, especially for our modern sensibilities.

The MRE is the greatest thing ever invented in that regard, then. Portable grills and cookers are great, too, but nothing beats an MRE for convenience. A selection of flavors are obtainable, even in just the U.S. alone – check out those from other nations, reflecting the culinary customs of the locals!

Of course, fresh air really whets an appetite, so just about anything should taste great. But just keep in mind one thing: never take food~ into the tent! It will attract pests like insects and other vermin, not to mention more serious creatures for instance bears and the like!

The Importance Of Machine And Equipment Appraisals

Machine and equipment appraisals are conducted by everybody from business owners and their brokers to financing institutions like banks and credit unions. These reviews are made in order to properly assess the fair market value of physical capital during times of corporate mergers, sales, and dissolutions.

Despite the name, however, appraisals can involve not only hardware but entire facilities too, and not just factory environments but settings as diverse as restaurants, sports stadiums, and hospitals.

Cases of litigation also make extensive use of machine and equipment appraisals, such as when negotiating with insurance companies. Government frequently encourages companies with corporate tax breaks, and many of these involve recognizably objective and independent appraisals.

When in the market for a professional appraiser, make certain to look for a person that advocates only on behalf of the appraisal, someone who will have no issues providing a detailed justification for their opinion. Believe it or not, there are many in the industry who simply expect to be trusted!

Unfortunately, when it comes to machine and equipment appraisals, the potential for a conflict of interest is great, for many appraisers actually sell the very equipment they also appraise. Of course, these people will note that there’s no better expert to effectively judge the worth of hardware than someone that would know it inside-out, for example a salesman or woman – but what’s to prevent them from profiting from both sides of a sale?

Since trust is what the appraisal business is all about, it makes sense to choose those who demonstrate impartiality upfront by making their living entirely from value determinations and nothing else. While no ironclad guarantee, it does eliminate one big area of concern. So avoid potential pitfalls by avoiding such situations altogether – and obviously ensure that the appraiser is properly certified in the first place!

The Importance Of Racing Strategies

Racing is not on the minds of most bicycle commuters, unless they happen to be messengers or deliverymen who, normally, ride to work! And in such instances, it would not be too surprising to find them employing what could pass for ad hoc racing strategies of the sort found in informal alleycat contests.

It might seem surprising that individuals who need to ride all day, every day, would also ride so fast, especially when not actually on the job but merely commuting there. Wouldn’t such individuals rather take a little break from any kind of racing for a while? Wouldn’t it make a lot more sense to slowly ease oneself into one’s day instead of rushing, rushing, rushing all the time?

Most folks would agree. But for the speedsters, it is all about the speed. For these kinds of people, it’s like how fish have to swim and birds need to fly. It’s not so much a conscious choice as an inborn need. If anything, it’s how they warm up for the day ahead.

Of course, the majority of individuals commuting by bicycle would like to get there as quick as possible, too. But for them, what’s possible is a lot more limited, in all likelihood, than for the racers who tend to make their living from bicycling all day.

Such individuals have so much practice, and they will have accumulated so much experience. They are almost fearless – and though fear normally lend wings to feet, fear when bicycling, particularly in an urban environment, can be an impediment to speed.

Actually, habitually slow riders tend to be those with no confidence. They are afraid – and understandably so. But the fear slows them down – not that speed is an absolute necessity for them anyway. The point is that it isn’t a matter of some being fast so much as others being slow.

Build You Pyramid With Any Network Marketing Systems

A variety of network marketing systems can be found on the internet nowadays. Sometimes known as MLM, or multi-level marketing, network marketing uses the power of exponents to create scope and depth that converts into increased sales and profits over time.

What’s the power of exponents? Simply this, that two becomes four, which turns into eight, which becomes sixteen — then thirty-two, then sixty-four, next a hundred and twenty-eight, then five hundred and twelve, then over a thousand…and so on.

That is the power of exponents.

And that’s what all MLM or network marketing systems utilize. Recruit one person, who in turn recruits two, each of whom recruits a further two to give you – they are your network. Therefore from one person in your network, you now have seven! That’s seven people working for you, because in a network marketing system everyone “kicks up” a certain percentage of the revenue. So the more people you recruit, and the more they recruit, the more money you make!

The world wide web makes such systems easier to create and manage, what with automation and a slew of options. The internet itself is a network (it is, after all, a web!) and so wonderfully complements network marketing, exponentially – yes, that word again – increasing its scope and depth – yes, scope and depth.

“Scope” refers to range while “depth” refers to quality. Not only does the internet increase your range by leaps and bounds, the nature of the medium is such that quality contacts are much easier to make and maintain. Not like in pre-internet days when network marketers had to rely on somewhat hit-or-miss media such as print or radio, the internet allows for really precise targeting of your audience, your market. Web metrics can tell you how many impressions are served up, what number of click-throughs occurred, and lastly what your conversion rates are – just for starters!

How Authoritarian Governments Give A Bad Name To House Arrest

House arrest is really a common type of incarceration for political dissidents the world over. Sadly, it’s only utilized on a few high-profile individuals, most likely as a nod to world opinion and foreign political pressure; most such individuals are merely taken away and occasionally not heard from again.

A quite humane kind of punishment, house arrest has gotten a bad reputation because of its widespread use by authoritarian governments all across the world. Nevertheless, optimists will note that this kind of extensive adoption bodes well for democracy and human rights in the long run.

After all, it could have been much less difficult for the tyrants to basically murder their opponents outright, as was nearly always the case in the past and as is still far too frequently the case even now. But the prevailing Zeitgeist is such that a nod towards some kind of decorum has become rather expected behavior, even of tyrants.

In the democracies, house arrest is only used in circumstances of fairly petty crimes and/or where the convicted has outstanding health issues that might make prison a likely death sentence. Unlike in authoritarian countries, home incarceration in a democracy is enforced by technological means, employing advanced electronic measures to ensure compliance as opposed to armed guards posted around the clock preventing access and egress.

First tried as far back as the turn of the twentieth century, it really is only in the late seventies and early eighties that house incarceration truly came into form with the development of reliable monitoring devices. Normally, the subject has to wear a bracelet or anklet that contains sensors which provide information on his or her whereabouts, enabling tracking by the authorities.

A less intrusive form involves automatic calling services that will call up the subject at random times, with computers matching the subject’s voice against a database of recognized patterns. Authorities are alerted in circumstances where the call is not answered or if the voice does not appear to match.
